Chess Grandmaster & Coach
I am Mykhaylo Oleksiyenko, a Ukrainian chess Grandmaster and PhD in mathematics.
I have been playing chess since 1991, and I have been teaching chess since 2011. I got my PhD in mathematics in 2012 and have been logic and a systematical scientific approach to chess ever since. My main accomplishments as a player include becoming Ukrainian champion in 2016 with a performance of 2770 (http://chess-results.com/tnr252381.aspx?lan=1&art=4) and becoming Ukrainian rapid chess champion in 2014, ahead of 17 grandmasters and several future grandmasters (https://archive.chess-results.com/tnr139115.aspx?lan=1&art=1&transfer=J)
The best players I was privileged to beat in classical chess include Gashimov(2759), Ivanchuk (2732), Harikrishna (2725), Wojtaszek (2724), and many more.
I became an International Master in 2002 and became a Grandmaster in 2005. Between 2006 and 2012, I was trying to combine my mathematical education and a subsequent PhD with my chess career. After getting my PhD in 2012, I dedicated myself to chess.
In 2013, I was the official commentator of the World Team Chess Championship (Antalya, Turkey). There, I had a fascinating opportunity to discuss chess with games with the future World Champion Ding Liren and some super grandmasters like Nakamura, Aronian, and Giri.
Next year, in 2014, I won the Ukrainian rapid chess championship.
In 2015, I got my FIDE Trainer title and started coaching the Dutch Women’s Chess team. In 2016, I was commentating Women’s World Chess Championship Match between Maria Muzychuk and Hou Yifan, which was held in my home city Lviv, Ukraine.
I got my biggest success so far (becoming the Ukrainian chess champion) later that year. In 2018, I was the second coach of the Ukrainian national team during the Olympiad. In 2019, I was the head coach of the Egyptian chess team during the World Team Chess Championship (Astana, Kazakhstan), and the African Games (Casablanca, Morocco).
During the World Teams 2019, I understood that my mission is to show the beauty of chess to the world. Since then, I started creating chess courses and writing chess books. As of early 2025, I have created seven courses for each of the following platforms: udemy.com, chessable.com, and modern-chess. Together with my coach, Volodymyr Grabinsky, we wrote two books on chess calculation for advanced players at qualitychess.com.
In 2021, I was coaching the national team of Trinidad and Tobago, and in 2022, I was a player and a coach (simultaneously) of the Ukrainian national team during the World Teams 2022. In 2024, I got second place in the Ukrainian Chess Championship. I have been giving weekly lectures at killerchesstraining.com since 2022.
I have been playing chess for more than 30 years, and I still find it fascinating! I want to share my love and passion for chess with you!
